How to Read an Energy Storage Battery Datasheet Without Getting Misled

A datasheet is a marketing document and an engineering document at the same time. The numbers on the front page are usually the most favourable ones measured under laboratory conditions, while the fine print tells you whether those conditions match your project.
Start with cycle life. A figure such as 6000 cycles is meaningless unless it states the depth of discharge, the charge-discharge rate and the ambient temperature. 6000 cycles at 80% DoD, 0.5C and 25°C is a very different promise from 6000 cycles at 50% DoD and 0.2C. Ask the supplier for the cycling curve, not just the endpoint number, because the curve shows how fast capacity fades in the first few hundred cycles.
Next check the usable capacity. Nominal capacity is calculated from cell chemistry and ampere-hours, but the usable capacity depends on the BMS voltage window. Some suppliers quote nominal values while others quote usable values at the recommended depth of discharge, which can create a 15% difference on paper for the same physical product.
Temperature range deserves the same scrutiny. Discharge at -20°C is possible for most LiFePO4 packs, but charging below 0°C damages cells unless the BMS blocks it. If your project sits in a cold climate, confirm whether the pack includes heating film and how much auxiliary power that consumes.
Finally, look at the communication protocol section. A datasheet that lists CAN 2.0B without naming supported inverter brands usually means the integration work will land on your engineering team. Suppliers who publish protocol profiles and setup guides reduce weeks of commissioning time.
A practical checklist for your next RFQ: request the cycling curve, the usable capacity definition, the low-temperature charging policy, the list of validated inverters, and a sample test report with serial numbers. Any supplier confident in their product will provide all five within a day.
